IBTS Launch Christmas Donor Recruitment Campaign
IBTS launch Christmas Donor Recruitment Campaign
National Blood Stock reduced by 30% since Mid October
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) launched a Christmas donor recruitment campaign today, Monday 28th November, aimed at encouraging the Irish people to give blood in the coming weeks. Traditionally, at this time of year there can be a reduction in the numbers giving blood, as people prepare for Christmas festivities.
There has been a steady reduction in the National Blood Stock since Mid October, warns Kieran Healy, Donor Services Manager. Whilst the IBTS is currently meeting the demands of hospitals throughout the country for blood and blood products, a continuing decline in donations would have serious implications for the blood supply to hospitals by year end. according to Healy.
The level of donations generally has fallen in recent week and there has been a significant decline in donations in the Greater Dublin Area, in particular. Only 6% of those in the 18-60 year old age group actually give blood.
Blood has a shelf life of 35 days and platelet, used extensively in the treatment of cancer patients, last for only 7 days. The blood supply needs to be regular, at about 3,000 donations per week, just to keep pace with the demands. The IBTS is constantly seeking new donors and is also encouraging existing donors to give blood at least twice per year. There is no substitute for human blood and one in four people will need a transfusion at some point in their lives.
On any given day blood and blood products are needed in treating patients undergoing surgery or those with diseases, such as leukaemia or other form of cancer. Irelands maternity hospitals, orthopaedic hospitals and A&E units also require a constant supply of blood. As the population is ageing, more blood is needed in the treatment of older people with a range of illness.
If all who are eligible to donate would do so on a regular basis (three to four times per year), blood needs could be met and shortages could become a thing of the past, said Kieran Healy
So, if you have never donated before, or if you are an existing donor and have not given blood in a while, Im asking you to make a special effort to visit one of our clinics in the coming week and give someone a priceless gift this Christmas says Healy.
