Essential measures being put in place to maintain the blood supply

Wednesday 1st December 2010

Due to the reduction in donations because of the adverse weather conditions, the blood supply is diminishing.  The IBTS is putting in place a number of contingency blood donation clinics to maintain supply. The adverse conditions are set to continue into next week and unless there is a significant increase in donations, there is a possibility that hospitals may be advised to cancel elective surgery.

“The amount of blood available is currently at about 5-6 days supply and demand remains constant, however, many of our programmed collection venues are proving difficult to reach and staff based in rural areas are having difficulty getting to their team base for deployment,” said Paddy Bowler IBTS  Operations Director.

Seven additional clinics are being scheduled for urban locations for Sunday 5th December, details of which will be available on www.giveblood.ie as soon as possible.
