The Tissue Bank is an HPRA authorised Tissue Establishment and Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Product manufacturing site. The Tissue Establishment license was obtained in January 2008 for Cardiovascular, Ocular and Directed Cord Blood donation. The tissue bank now supplies a broad range of tissues for surgical and therapeutic use across Ireland including musculoskeletal tissue, serum eye-drops and allogeneic skin for treatment of burns.
In January 2016 the IBTS Tissue Bank was also granted a licence for manufacture of Limbal Stem Cells, an Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Product (ATMP) for use under hospital exemption in treatment of limbal stem cell deficiency. The Limbal Stem Cell service is the culmination of successful collaboration between researchers, scientists and clinicians in the National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology (NICB) in Dublin City University (DCU), the Tissue Bank at the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) and the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital.
The European Directive 2004/23/EC and its technical annexes ensure a high standard of quality and safety is maintained in all Tissue Bank activities. This applies to the donation, procurement, testing, processing, preservation, storage and distribution of all tissues, including stem cells.
