World Blood Donor Day 2011

World Blood Donor Day - Blood Donors Brighten Lives

This year we will celebrate World Blood Donor Day with another iconic photo shoot, which takes place on June 7th, in St. Patrick's Park, Dublin. Click here for details on how to join us World Blood Donor Day Photo Shoot.pdf (size 1 MB)

Our campaign aims to recognise and reward existing donors, recruit new donors and establish the strong need for blood over the coming summer months .The international event focuses on the importance of voluntary blood donation and encourages more people to become regular donors. The day highlights the need to regularly give blood to prevent shortages in hospitals.

The annual event focuses on motivating more people to become blood donors while also demonstrating how health systems and policy-makers work to make blood transfusions safe and accessible to people worldwide.

Here in Ireland we have a strong radio and online campaign, competitions on our facebook (www.facebook.com/giveblood) and twitter (giveblood_ie) pages, new merchandise at clinics nationwide, on street promotions nationwide, a donor awards ceremony in Dublin and features on RTÉ 1 and RTÉ Radio 1.

President Mary McAleese spoke at an official ceremony on World Blood Donor Day, see a copy of her speech here
